The first round of the presidential elections in France is a continuation of the global political crisis. With the emergence of social networks and other modern means of communication, systemic political forces simply have nothing to offer their voters. Previously, they had been working through the mass media system – television, radio, newspapers, and magazines. The potential voter did not have another way of obtaining information. Today every person, if he is interesting, is the mass media himself. The world is changing and those who know how to shout loudly come instead of political forces. The apotheosis of this attitude towards politics and politicians was the coming to power of populist Donald Trump.
France was not an exception. The main political forces of France, these are the Socialist Party, the Republican Gaullists, the Union of Democrats and Independent and even the Left Front, all their representatives didn’t push the nomination to a secont ballot. In the second round, we see a representative of the National Front Marie Le Pen, who is close to the marginal, she was not even given money to the elections by the leader of the party “Vpered!», which was created last year by Emmanuel Macron.
Marie Le Pen is the daughter of famous French nationalist Jean-Marie Le Pen, known for his xenophobic and even anti-Semitic remarks. As they say, like father like daughter… Marie Le Pen does not hesitate in the expressions and calls for tightening the migration policy and isolation from the European Union, like her father. Nevertheless, these slogans resonate in the hearts of French people, tired of the domination of refugees and other migrants from the Arab countries and North Africa. Anyway, the slogans of Madame Le Pen are more populist, in fact they are as difficult to implement as the recent “anti-immigrant” initiatives of Donald Trump.
Emmanuel Macron is no less a populist, only with the opposite sign. In his program, the Eurocentrism and “third way for France” coexist in a strange way. These are socialist and liberal slogans, which practically exclude each other. And also there is a fight against terrorism and the open door policy for migrants. That is, in theory, this all can get along with each other, but in practice…
In short, on May 7, when the second round is over, the French will choose their president and he will definitely not be a representative of a systemic political force. Thus, he will have to conduct difficult negotiations and find supporters, as in the two chambers of the Parliament – the Senate and the National Assembly, and in the European Parliament, where all the same representatives of other, not always friendly political forces are sitting.
Well, a small, juicy detail. It seems that the new president of the Fifth Republic will do without a sexual scandal, which persecuted virtually all of his predecessors. And Marie Le Pen and Emmanuelle Macron have a reputation for loving and faithful spouses. However, time will tell…
