They captured the journalist, took him to the Kiev region and killed him there. After that, the so-called “Melnichenko films” were made public, from which it can be understood that previous president of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, could have been involved in the murder. This caused a huge resonance in the society right up to mass protests. All the presidents, starting with Viktor Yushchenko, publicly promised that the case would be solved. They shot from the TT pistol with a silencer, so no one from the neighbors heard the shots. After a while another member of the same gang, Valery Pushnyakov, was killed, and he was recognized as the organizer of the murder, although this has not been fully proved. The instigator cannot be identified, although there were rumors that the former Prime Minister of Ukraine Pavel Lazarenko had been involved in this.
