The EU Court found the sanctions against the Russian Rosneft justified

The highest judicial level of the European Union, the EU Court has adopted reasoned sanctions against the Russian energy giant in the Rosneft oil market.

In a March 28 statement, the court stated that “the restrictive measures taken by the Council of the European Union in response to the crisis in Ukraine regarding certain Russian enterprises, including Rosneft, have been justified.”

According to the ruling of the court, the limitation on the part of the EU of the possibility of the state-regulated Rosneft to conduct trade was commensurate with the degree of economic sanctions taken against the Russian Federation.

Rosneft  said that he was disappointed with the conclusion, which “proves that the rule of law in Europe is being replaced by the primacy of the political situation”.

Rosneft is chaired by Igor Sechin, a close ally and adherent of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Rosneft filed an application to cancel the impact of UK sanctions on the London High Court in October 2014. In February 2015, the High Court of London sent the matter to the EU Court.

The company claims that the EU has used sanctions as restrictive measures in order to force Russia out of the markets and use additional obstacles to work.

The European Union imposed sanctions against Russia in July 2014 after it illegally occupied the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, and subsequently expanded them – through the support that the Kremlin provides to militants in the east of Ukraine.
